Loving from the broken places.
"The world breaks all of us. Some of us become strong at the broken places." Ernest Hemingway wrote those words (or words very much like them). Tragically, Hemingway – who died of a self-inflicted shotgun blast – never learned how to become strong at his own broken places.
I'm finding that many of the friends in my life circle are struggling this Christmas season. My heart and prayers go out to those struggling with difficulties in their families and those that have lost loved ones. I truly believe the one hope we have is in Jesus Christ. He said, "Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.' Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.'" (John 20:26-27)
If we are to serve in a truly Christlike way, we must recognize the ways we are wounded, ourselves – and, from that place of our own healing, reach out to others.
Reach out to those this Christmas season that need love. Whether it be a hug or a smile across the room. We all need to be loved and cared for... and we all need healing for the wounds that have come into our lives. In reaching out to others we receive healing ourselves. We need each other and we need to know our Savior.
